Blood Clots: Good and Bad Facts about Blood Clotting Process

Blood clots (It is called thrombus in medical language) are result of blood clotting process. Blood clotting is an essential healing process. Formation of blood clots takes place at the site of bleeding caused by wound, cut or injuries. Grouping of blood clots stops more bleeding. A body unable to form blood clots can be dangerous as even a minor injury may cause death because of excess bleeding.

Note: Blood clots do not form for external injuries but for internal injuries such as damaged blood vessels, leakages in arteries and veins.

 

Blood clots can be dangerous

In some cases blood clots are responsible to life threatening conditions. When blood clots get into blood flowing system it may block blood flow to important organs. Logging caused by blood clots in artery, capillaries, vessels and veins of heart or brain may result in dangerous condition. It can cause strokes, heart attack.

You would probably think if blood clotting is important process and it can be dangerous as well, then why not all people suffer from strokes or heart attack. Reason is as blood clots formed by body’s healing system, body system also have tendency to dissolve blood clots. Thus, our body destroys blood clots once its job is finished.

Sometimes, some blood clots starts flowing into circulatory system instead of being destroyed. These blood clots are called thrombus when it blocks blood flow.

 

Blood Clotting Process

Platelets first stick itself at the site of injury. Series of event take place to activate those platelets. A special protein known as fibrin holds platelets together. Strands of fibrin combined with platelets are called blood clots.

Treatment for Harmful Blood Clots (Thrombus)

Drugs known as anticoagulants are choice of doctors’ for treatment.
